The mortal world met with Maui, an immortal demigod with supernatural abilities, in Disney’s Moana. Maui served mankind for a long time, which is made clear by his tattoos. New tattoos appear when he reaches a milestone or does something good for the humans because they must be earned. The demigod has a mighty fish hook that makes it possible for Maui to take any form he can imagine, but mostly animals. Maui is boisterous, narcissistic and prideful, he loves to talk about his legends and to praise himself. But most of all, he wants to be accepted, because he’s also insecure. As a consequence of his endless need to please humans, Maui created a darkness that slowly started consuming the whole world after stealing the heart of Te Fiti, the mother island. He then helped Moana to return the heart to Te Fiti and got his hero status back. At times Maui can be selfish, but also selfless when needed. He is a charismatic and adventurous demigod that loves to be the ‘Hero to All’.
