For her time, Belle is a free and educated woman. She reads a lot to meet her desire for adventure and knowledge. Her way of living makes her different than the other villagers, leaving her with a feeling that she does not fit in the village where she lives.  Although villagers, especially Gaston, give her a hard time, she remains resolute when it comes to upholding her ideas and refuses to be controlled by anyone.
